Behind the Science

Type 1 diabetes is characterized by the destruction of insulin-producing beta cells within the pancreatic islets, resulting in the loss of the body’s ability to regulate blood glucose levels. While advances in insulin therapy and glucose monitoring have improved disease management, transplantation of pancreatic islets or whole pancreas tissue remains an important treatment option for some patients.

The broader application of transplantation-based therapies, however, is limited by the availability of suitable human donor organs and tissues. This challenge has driven ongoing research into alternative sources such as xenotransplantation — the transplantation of cells, tissues, or organs from animal sources such as swine — as a promising alternative to help support future transplantation and cell-based therapeutic approaches.

Spring Point Project, LLC (SPP) is dedicated to advancing xenotransplantation research through the production and maintenance of designated pathogen-free (DPF) swine, the foundation of safe and reliable xenotransplantation source animals. Through specialized animal husbandry, advanced reproductive technologies, biosecure operations, and robust quality systems, SPP develops and maintains high-health animal resources dedicated to xenotransplantation and cell-based therapeutic applications.
